Shawl of Spring

February 25th, 2009

Sometimes getting gear that is different or special than other players can be difficult, especially in a game like WAR. However, there is a really cool-looking cloak you can get for yourself at a relatively low level whether you are a champion of Order or Destruction.

The Shawl of Spring is a simple cloak that adds nothing special to your stats, but looks really cool. It is pretty simple to get once you are in the Tier 2 range and costs nothing! To get it, you must simply slay a mob for a Tome unlock then travel to either Altdorf (Order) or the Inevitable City (Destruction) and speak to an NPC to receive it.

The mob that provides you with this Tome unlock is named Sheen Gloomleaf. She is located in Ostland, Empire Vs Chaos Zone.

Sheen Gloomleaf

After you have slain the beast, make your way to your faction’s capital and speak to the following NPC:

Destruction

Head west to the Lyceum. In there you will find an NPC named Disciple Venomstung. Scroll down until you see Shawl of Spring and you should be able to buy it for free!

Order

Head to the Altdorf Library. In there you will find a NPC named Mandred Vogt. Scroll down until you see Shawl of Spring and you should be able to purchase it for free!

Installing an Addons to WAR

February 12th, 2009

Many MMORPGs allow you to install your own custom addons to the game. The most famous so far has been World of Warcraft, which has taken the ability to modify the game to new heights. Fortunately for Warhammer Online players, Mythic has given us the same ability. Even more fortunately for those of us who are not technically inclined, the process is almost identical to WoW and is a snap to accomplish.

Step 1: Make sure you have the Addons directory.  It may not be there by default and you may need to create both the Interface and Addons directory. Doing so is quite easy, however. Simply make a new directory in your Warhammer installation directory structured as:

<warhammer-installation-directory>\Interface\Addons\

In my case it is C:\Program Files\Warhammer Online\Interface\Addons.

Step 2: Find and download the addons you’re interested in. My repository of choice is over at Curse Gaming which maintains a huge database of files for addon developers. If you want to create your own addons, this is probably also the best place to advertise them.

Step 3: Unzip the addon you downloaded into the “Addons” directory using a typical unzipping utility such as 7Zip. The addon maker should have zipped their addon with the appropriate directory structure, but if not or if you are curious each addon should have its own addon directory within the parent addons directory. For example an addon called “WAR-pvp-addon” would be in the following directory:

<warhammer-installation-directory>\Interface\Addons\WAR-pvp-addon\

Step 4: Start up the game. That’s all you basically have to do - your addons will be active. If you have any problems with a particular addon, make sure to leave the addon maker comments on Curse.

Leveling salvaging with Tier 1 renown items

September 20th, 2008

First, let’s be honest: Salvaging can be a colossal pain in the ass to level up, especially in the earlier levels. Sure, Warhammer Online hasn’t even been out a week so one can expect there to be rough edges and some areas of the game that aren’t fully understood by players yet. But salvaging is just plain broken … or is it?

There is a lot of confusion right now as to what exactly is and what isn’t salvageable. And some of those rough edges may also be showing themselves in the form of improperly flagged items, though that is pure speculation. But after researching this I found an easy way to blast through the early skill levels of salvaging.

OK, let me qualify that by saying it is a *relatively* easy strategy. Being able to burn through the levels with this is going to assume a few things, namely:

  • you are made of gold - not literally, but you will want to have a tidy sum on hand
  • you have participated in enough RvR to attain Renown Rank 4

I have found that both the Renown gloves and boots are easily salvageable. They are available in infinite supply from the Tier 1 Warcamp Renown Gear Merchants. All the boots and gloves, regardless of class requirement, can be salvaged allowing you a small amount of leeway in choosing what fragment enhancement you want.

This is going to be expensive, and you’ll really feel it if you’re doing it all in one shot.

  • Boots: 7.97 silver
  • Gloves: 9.11 silver

Because Magical Salvaging levels so slowly, you’ll be spending quite a bit running through this. But as you raise you skill, you will get more successful salvages. These will get you to skill 10, but are most effective after 10.

I recommend simply leveling on the boots as they are cheaper than the gloves, but the gloves offer more choice in the stat bonuses savaged. Remember, though, that this costs and arm and a leg, right now. I’ve found my success rate to get a skillup about one skill point for 1.5 to 2 boots. Meaning if you are trying to level from 1-50, expect to bring at least 6.75 gold.

I hope this has helped some, I’ll be updating this post as I figure more out. If you have a tip or would like to add something, feel free to comment below

Soloable Public Quest with Raid-Sized Rewards

September 17th, 2008

I just got done soloing this PQ and let me tell you I am going back again tonight to do it at least a few more times. This quest is practically dripping blue and purple items and can be solo-completed as early as level nine. This should be at the top of every Order player’s list as soon as they hit level 10 as it will also get you your first shoulder item.

The quest is March of the Dead, located in the middle of the Docks district in Altdorf (WarDB | HammerWiki). The premise is basic, there are loads of continually spawning undead in a tucked-away corner and you must kill 50 of them. They are called Mindless Dead and they are regular level 10 mobs that are passive and go down very easy.

So completing this quest is easy even when soloing - if you are in a group you should be able to complete it in a few minutes - but the rewards, oh the rewards.

Firstly, this quest is basically required for you to get a halfway decent shoulder item once you hit level 10. I found a few shoulder items during the course of regular leveling, but the Quarryman class shoulders I got from this quest blew them all away. These combined with your Vengeance class RvR items will ensure you are a dominant force in Tier 1 RvR.

But it gets even better: this PQ also has the chance to grant the best lootbags which will get you those blue and purple items we all want. Make sure to check out the loot drops at the WarDB quest page above … fantastic loot!

The fact that this quest is soloable in a relatively short time and a group of two or three people can run through this bad boy with a quickness makes this a must-do quest for every Order player.
